In its annual scorecard, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) assesses the efforts of top U.S. food service companies to reduce their impact on the environment and animals through purchasing and menuing practices.

Guckenheimer, a leading food services provider in the U.S., has achieved the #1 rank in the HSUS’s annual protein sustainability scorecard for the third consecutive year.

In its accompanying report, the HSUS highlights Guckenheimer’s actions in implementing new plant-based recipes as company standards, tracking greenhouse gas emissions associated with the protein foods it serves, and its “industry-setting plant-based and sustainability commitments.”

The report states: “Guckenheimer continues to lead the way among the top 50 food service management companies, with the strongest plant-based goal in the food service industry to date. We applaud Guckenheimer on continually raising the bar with its ambitious plant-based and sustainability initiatives, and we look forward to continuing to assist with achieving its commitments by increasing the amount of delicious, climate-friendly meals it offers companywide. We encourage other companies to follow its lead.”

To inform its scorecard ranking, the HSUS evaluated food service providers across three areas related to sustainability: transparency, goals, and a plan of action. The full Protein Sustainability Scorecard can be found at HumaneSociety.org/FoodReport.

“Achieving the very top rating for the third consecutive year, amid so much competition, is a testament to the focus, drive and determination of our culinary, procurement, and operations teams to deliver really meaningful outcomes to our clients and Placemakers,” said Pete Rukule, Vice President of Culinary for  Guckenheimer. “By offering more climate-friendly, plant-based menu choices across our dining facilities we are providing highly nutritious, flavorful meal choices while at the same time reducing the impact and overall environmental footprint of the food we provide.”

This year’s #1 HSUS ranking is the latest food sustainability milestone for  Guckenheimer. It recently featured plant-based food programs to celebrate Earth Day and World Pulses Day, and also announced the progress it is making in halving food waste. Through the Cool Food Pledge, the company is targeting a 25% reduction in food greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. In partnership with the Beans is How Coalition, it is harnessing the nutritional power of beans in the creation of low-carbon meals with emissions of at least 38% below average.

Guckenheimer’s food services offering includes cafes and culinary experiences; catering, events, and executive dining; micro-kitchens and pop-ups; coffee and espresso. The integrated facilities management service mix for ISS includes the provision of food, technical, workplace, and cleaning services, among others. The company provides these offerings across major industry segments, including life sciences, healthcare, technology, manufacturing, banking and professional services, and aviation.
